Did You Know?
If you are delayed a ½ hour every weekday, you would experience almost $5,000 in lost productivity or delay costs every year.

Imagine the total cost for the other 125,000 commuters who experience the same delay!

Project Overview
PURPOSE & NEED
Why Improve the "IKE" ?

The purpose of reconstructing the I-290 Eisenhower Expressway corridor between US Route 12/20/45 (Mannheim Road) and IL Route 50 (Cicero Avenue) is to improve the safety and mobility of current and future travelers. Upgrading this seven-mile section of roadway to current design standards would:

  • Correct safety deficiencies
  • Reduce congestion
  • Remove traffic bottleneck
  • Improve access to transit facilities
  • Replace 50 year old bridges and pavement

The Eisenhower Expressway currently experiences congestion or stop-and-go traffic for 14 hours on the average weekday. The main cause of this congestion is eight lanes narrowing to six lanes between Mannheim Road and Austin Boulevard. In addition, cross-streets at I-290 interchanges, such as Harlem, Des Plaines, Cicero, and 1st Avenue also experience severe congestion.
